The MMQS Give Back on Mandela Day Golf Event began in 2014 as a conversation about empowering caddies, who had long been marginalized in the game of golf. With the blessing of the Mandela Foundation, the initiative grew from a small, informal gathering into a structured annual event. Over the years, the event expanded its impact by including previously disadvantaged professional golfers, ensuring female representation, and awarding cash prizes to top performers.
By 2016, sponsorship efforts were underway, but MMQS remained committed to making the event happen, regardless of financial backing. The event evolved further in 2018 with the introduction of “27 years – 27 holes” at Blair Athol, creating a unique playing experience alongside continued support for caddies and emerging black professionals.
Despite setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, the event made a strong comeback in 2022 at the prestigious River Club, incorporating new elements such as the foursomes format and charitable bogeys donations.
The 2023 edition was particularly special, marking MMQSMACE’s 20th anniversary, celebrating the first female winner, Ethel Nyembe, and raising over R180,000 through auctions and donations.
Over the years, the event has grown into a cherished tradition, touching more lives than initially envisioned. With gratitude to all participants and supporters, MMQS remains committed to continuing this meaningful journey of giving back through the game of golf.
